Mardi Gras and ´Doughnut Day´ at the Dalešice Brewer (4 February 2023)

Celebration of Mardi Gras and Doughnut Day were other of the events organised for public within the project supported by the EEA and Norway Grants, in connection with the presentation of Czech and Icelandic traditions and customs. Doughnut Day is an Icelandic traditional event celebrated seven weeks before Easter. The festivity was part of the Mardi Gras carnival held in Dalešice village every year thanks to the engagement of local firefighters. During the events heldat the Dalešice Brewery organizers usually offer to visitors traditional and non-traditional gastronomic dishes, so they could not be missing this time either. We prepared popular pig-slaughter specialties for participants, which they could taste and enjoy before the beginning of Lent.

Those who came that day could also get involved in filling and decorating doughnuts according to Czech and Icelandic recipes.This activity particularly interested children who took initiative to decorate the doughnuts themselves. Organizers prepared various types of fillings: several flavours of jam, caramel butter, mascarpone whipped cream, chocolate or caramel icing. Sugar mixed with cinnamon was used for coating the doughnuts. The taste ofIcelandic doughnuts attracted attention of almost all visitors, some of them even wanted to try all the fillings. The sweet course was accompanied byalready mentioned traditional Czech slaughter specialitiessuch as the tripe and blood sausages as well as thebrawn.

Within the following discussions with visitors, the organisers explained why Icelandic doughnuts are served during this festivity and added also the details on the difference between the Czechandthe Icelandic ones. In addition, they took this opportunity to provide details about the project itself and the financial support of the EEA and Norway Grants.Comers were informed about the upcoming multimedia exposition to be part of the renovated museum tour at the Dalešice Brewery.

In the afternoon, the carnival parade in masksarrived in the brewery's premises and enriched the festive atmosphere with dancing and music.
